Ways salaried individuals may reduce tax

Compare both regimes every year using only deductions you can substantiate.

Under the old regime, review eligible 80C investments, employee PF, tuition fees and principal repayment within the combined ceiling.

Check additional NPS contribution under 80CCD(1B), eligible health-insurance deduction under 80D, HRA exemption and home-loan benefits.

Under the new regime, review eligible employer NPS contribution under 80CCD(2) and structure salary components carefully.

Submit declarations and proofs to your employer on time and reconcile Form 16, AIS and Form 26AS before filing.

Important calculation notes

This simplified estimate is for salary income of an individual below 60 and includes standard deduction, slab tax, applicable rebate or marginal relief, and 4% cess. It does not calculate surcharge, relief, arrears, agricultural income, capital gains, lottery income, foreign income, perquisites or other special-rate income. Eligibility for deductions depends on facts and documents.

Always use a complete computation before filing or making investment decisions.
